Social Studies in Alberta

If you teach in Alberta, you know that the government made major changes to all subject areas in kindergarten through Grade 6. We plan on updating or rewriting resources for social studies, but this takes time. We need to review the curriculum to see which resources can be updated at the same grade level, which need to be adjusted for other grades and which need to be written from scratch. In the past, this has taken years, so we cannot guarantee any resources will be adjusted for the 2024-25 school year. We want to ensure the outcomes are finalized before committing the time (since there have been so many changes over the past 8 years).

We do have some basic information that you may find helpful.

The original Grade 4 and Grade 5 social studies bundles will be discontinued as the majority of the resources will not work in the new grade levels. Some of those resources will be adjusted for other grades (so you will receive those updates), but the majority will not be useable in the new Alberta curriculum. You will still have access to these resources, but they will not be available for sale after June 30, 2024.

Since so much of the new curriculum needs to be written, we will need time to decide how (and if) the material will work. We would like to make the resources be as complete and useful as possible for Alberta teachers.

Grade 2

Many of our Grade 5 resources are on the same topic as the new Grade 2. However, we will not be adjusting our Canadian geography resources for Grade 2. First, we are not curriculum writers for Division 1. Second, the activities are too advanced for Grade 2 regardless of how simple we try to make them. We do not plan to write any resources for Grade 2 at this time.

Grade 3

Our current Grade 4 Alberta geography resources might work for Grade 3, so we are considering adjusting these resources. Everything else will need to be written from scratch. We will be reviewing the resources during the 2024-25 school year to see what will still work.
